Traditional Chinese Medicines

Traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) is thousands of years old and has changed little over the centuries. Its basic concept is that a vital force of life, called Qi, surges through the body.

Any imbalance to Qi can cause disease and illness. This imbalance is most commonly thought to be caused by an alteration in the opposite and complementary forces that make up the Qi.

Acupuncture

Traditional acupuncture is a health care system based on ancient principles which go back nearly two thousand years. It looks at pain and illness as signs that the body is out of balance, with the overall aim of an acupuncture treatment to restore the body’s equilibrium.

Combined Cupping & Gua Sha Therapy

Cupping is a therapy which dates back to 1000bc in China. A ‘cup’ is attached to the skin and a vacuum state is created to draw the skin and underlying tissue into the cup.

The produced vacuum creates a suction effect that increases blood and lymphatic circulation to the local area, relaxes muscle tissue and support, draws out stagnation, pathogenic factors and toxins out of the body and releases a myriad of pain causing factors.

Cupping therapy benefits include:

  • Deep tissue work without discomfort

  • Moves stagnation and drains fluids

  • Relieves inflammation

  • Sedates the nervous system

  • Breaks up and expels congestion

  • Stretches muscle and connective tissue

  • Loosens adhesions

  • Pulls blood supply to the skin

Gua Sha is a therapy which was widely used in China during the warring states period (770-221BC).

It means to ‘scrape’ and water buffalo horn is used to stimulate the skin, muscles and nerve tissue to increase disease resistance, remove tension and promote smooth flow of qi and blood.

Gua Sha benefits include:

  • Revitalisation of muscle and peripheral nerves

  • Speeds up metabolism

  • Increases cellular immunity

  • Helps blood circulation

  • Acceleration of lymphatic circulation and helps cellular phagocytosis

  • Improves the nerve function of the cerebral cortex, controlling balance in the endocrine system

Tui Na Chinese Massage

Tui Na (pronounced ‘twee-na’) massage is a complete healing system, like acupuncture and Chinese herbal medicine.

These three forms of therapy are the main components of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM). Tui na is probably the oldest system of bodywork still practised yet its popularity continues to grow.

Tui Na treats chronic pain, especially that caused by muscle and skeletal conditions and injuries. Neck, shoulder and back pain and immobility, sciatica and ‘tennis elbow’ all respond very well. Headaches, migraines, IBS, constipation, PMS, and a whole range of emotional problems can also be treated.
